Understanding the Numbers

🛡️

Hashrate & Security

Hashrate measures the total computing power securing the Bitcoin network. Higher hashrate means more energy is spent mining blocks, making the network exponentially harder to attack. A 51% attack becomes practically impossible when hashrate is measured in hundreds of exahashes per second.

⚖️

Difficulty Adjustments

Every 2,016 blocks (~2 weeks), Bitcoin automatically adjusts its mining difficulty to maintain a 10-minute average block time. If blocks come too fast, difficulty increases. Too slow, it decreases. This self-regulating mechanism is what keeps Bitcoin running without any central authority.

Mempool & Fees

The mempool is Bitcoin's waiting room - unconfirmed transactions sit here until miners include them in a block. When demand is high, the mempool fills up and users compete by paying higher fees. When it's quiet, fees drop. Understanding this helps you time your transactions for lower costs.
